распродажа. Слово не жаргонное, но очень уж ходовое. Американцев постоянно убеждают в том, что они ходят в магазин не тратить деньги, а экономить. Процентов 70 одежды продается с указателями "sale", да еще всегда приведена старая цена (или несколько), чтобы наглядно показать, что сейчас-то эта классная вещь продается совсем уж по дешевке. Все продавцы - психологи! Причем чего только не продают, см. цв. илл. (Чего только не продают! Это реклама необходимого каждому американцу устройства. "Уриноватор" способен пописать за вас для анализа: "Let us pee for you!" Правда, это только для мужчин, в рекламе подчеркнуто: "...выглядит как реальная штука". Это чтоб инспектор не сомневался, что всё вытекло у него на глазах прямо из вас. См. комментарии к слову "sell".).

Garage sale (yard sale, rummage sale) — гаражная или дворовая распродажа. Что распродают? Все уже ненужное в хозяйстве или оставляемое при отъезде, всякий старый домашний хлам (логично бы ввести новое обобщенное слово - chlamsale). Попадается тут все, от токарного станка, до семейной фотографии прошлого века. Это, по сути, индивидуальная барахолка, домашняя, временная, на пару дней. Штука в США очень популярная, в каждой районной газете еженедельно находишь несколько новых объявлений. Почему? Во-первых, старые вещи всегда приятнее и рациональнее продать (хоть и дешево), чем выбросить. Во-вторых - люди там, как и у нас, любят прикупить что-то практически даром. Наконец, в-третьих - это своего рода тусовка, популярное развлечение, там просто побродить интересно. Не купишь, так поглазеешь как люди живут, с кем-то пообщаешься. На цв. илл.
